The Best Baby Carriers for Newborns – Complete Reviews with Comparison

best baby carriers for newborns
Spread the love

This list of the best baby carriers for newborns has been created so that you can see the best, without needing to wade through the many available carriers out there. And without having to decipher whether or not they will be suitable for a newborn.

If you're a parent who has experienced a newborn baby who will only be calm when you're carrying them standing up, then you'll be aware of just what a life save a baby carrier can be.

If you're about to become a parent for the first time, then maybe you've read or been told just how valuable a carrier can be for an unsettled baby, but you're not sure where to start.

Not all baby carriers are suitable for newborns. And a lot of parents (myself included) have bought carriers that aren't newborn suitable and had to either get an infant insert to make them suitable, had to buy a whole new carrier or had to wait until their baby was bigger until they used a carrier with them.

This list is here to ensure that you get the right carrier for your newborn, first time.

Note: This list is just for structured carriers and doesn't include wraps, mei tais or slings. That's for another list!

Best Baby Carriers for Newborns Reviews

1. BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Original

BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Original - Black Spirit, Cotton

The BabyBjorn baby carrier Original is probably the easiest carrier, ever, to put on and to take off, even by yourself.

If you:

  • are a first time baby wearer; or
  • you also have a toddler to look after; or
  •  you simply like things to be easy (don't we all!)

Then that ease is something you're really going to appreciate.

Product Highlights

The Babybjorn Original is really a newborn/young baby specialist carrier - so you know it's going to be suitable for your new baby.

The downside of that is you will need to get a second carrier, once you're baby is bigger, if you intend to continue to baby wear. The maximum weight on the Babybjorn Original is 25lbs, but most would have a hard time carrying a baby larger than 15lbs in it. That gives you until around 4 months, depending on the size of your baby.

But if that's no issue, then the Babybjorn Original is a great option and comes in at a really reasonable price (as it should for a carrier that lasts only around 4 months).

BABYBJORN Baby Carrier Original - Black Spirit, Cotton
  • Provides essential closeness and contact to help you bond with your new baby
  • Two safe and ergonomic carrying positions: baby facing-in and baby facing-out
  • Perfect for newborns - no infant insert needed. From birth to approximately 12 months
  • Developed with pediatricians to give the proper support for baby's head, neck, spine and hips
  • Small, safe and easy to use - fits perfectly and securely with only a few adjustments

What's to like about the Babybjorn Original Carrier

It's not only easy to get on, but it's super easy to get baby out, without even having to take off the shoulder straps. Super handy if your baby has fallen asleep and you need to transfer them to their crib.

What's not to like about the Babybjorn Baby Carrier Original

There is no waist belt, this means all of the weight is on your back. This, and some concerns about the hip position, make this a carrier that you only really want to use in short stints.

Note: Babybjorn have just released their Babybjorn Baby Carrier Mini, which is going to replace the Original. It's an updated version of the Original that is more ergonomic and does a better job of putting baby's hips into an "M" position.

PROS

  • check
Super easy to put on and remove
  • check
Minimal disturbance moving baby when sleeping
  • check
    Fits newborns really well
  • check
Feel nice and close to baby in it
  • check
Light weight for breathability and portability
  • check
    No infant insert required

CONS

  • Need to replace after 4-6 months
  • times-circle
No waist belt so all force is on back

  2. Toddler facing-in
  3. Hip
  4. Back

It's ergonomic, comfortable, comes with a sun hood and adjustable head support for newborns, so overall very newborn friendly and something you can keep for when your baby gets older too.

There are 3 different versions of the Complete that you can get too:

I like these baby carriers. it really frees up your hands while allowing you to carry your baby. It is also a good way to get a workout in :).

I think these carriers (if well designed) can also alleviate some of the aches and pains from holding your baby in your hands or on your hip all day.

My aunt uses one when she takes care of her grandson who is very heavy for his age. She says it is far easier than carrying him in her hands and allows her to do work and keep him happy as well.

    Hi Renton

    Thanks for your message.

Yeah have always been a godsend for us. All of the things you mention. Our first son is big for his age, so carrying him without assistance was undoable – and he always wants to be carried!

Carrying him was always a great way to settle him too, when he was upset.

Our new baby isn’t a great sleeper – but we find that if all else fails, taking him for a walk in his carrier is the fail safe way to get him to nod off. Also he never wants to be put down. So to get anything done, he needs to be in the carrier!

Hi, great post but I got to say that I’m a little bit concern on a few of them because I know a lot about ergonomic portage and especially with a newborn you should be really careful for providing the perfect position that allows the baby to maintain his original posture (as a frog).
The ergonomic ones are also much more comfortable for parents too 🙂

    Hi Paola

    Thanks for your message.

I can’t agree more that ensuring that a newborn is in a frog, aka “M” shaped posture is very important. I have highlighted that with the Babybjorn Original there are concerns that it doesn’t promote the best hip position for babies, but also, I have been meaning to replace that with the Babybjorn Mini (their new more hip friendly replacement for the original) – thanks for reminding me to do that.

As far as I know the rest of the carriers on the list are ergonomic and have been classified as such by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. But if there are others on the list, other than the Babybjorn mini, that you have concerns for in terms of babies posture, I would be interested to hear about those.
